Aristotle thought the earth had existed eternally. Roman poet Lucretius, intellectual heir to the Greek atomists, believed its formation must have been relatively recent, given that there were no records going back beyond the Trojan War. The Talmudic rabbis, Martin Luther and others used the biblical account to extrapolate back from known history and came up with rather similar estimates for when the earth came into being. Within decades observation began overtaking such thinking. In the s Nicolas Steno formulated our modern concepts of deposition of horizontal strata. He inferred that where the layers are not horizontal, they must have been tilted since their deposition and noted that different strata contain different kinds of fossil. This position came to be known as uniformitarianism, but within it we must distinguish between uniformity of natural law which nearly all of us would accept and the increasingly questionable assumptions of uniformity of process, uniformity of rate and uniformity of outcome. That is the background to the intellectual drama being played out in this series of papers.

The term cloning describes a number of different processes that can be used to produce genetically identical copies of a biological entity. The copied material, which has the same genetic makeup as the original, is referred to as a clone. Researchers have cloned a wide range of biological materials, including genes, cells, tissues and even entire organisms, such as a sheep. In nature, some plants and single-celled organisms, such as bacteria , produce genetically identical offspring through a process called asexual reproduction.
In asexual reproduction, a new individual is generated from a copy of a single cell from the parent organism. Natural clones, also known as identical twins, occur in humans and other mammals. These twins are produced when a fertilized egg splits, creating two or more embryos that carry almost identical DNA.

If you’ve ever come out of a bad relationship and decided you need to date someone different from your usual “type,” you’re not alone. However, new research by social psychologists at the University of Toronto U of T suggests that might be easier said than done. A study published today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows people often look for love with the same type of person over and over again.
Using data from an ongoing multi-year study on couples and families across several age groups, Park and co-author Geoff MacDonald, a professor in the Department of Psychology at U of T, compared the personalities of current and past partners of people.

Scientific Style and Format presents three systems for referring to references also known as citations within the text of a journal article, book, or other scientific publication: 1 citation—sequence; 2 name—year; and 3 citation—name. These abbreviated references are called in-text references. They refer to a list of references at the end of the document. The system of in-text references that you use will determine the order of references at the end of your document.
These end references have essentially the same format in all three systems, except for the placement of the date of publication in the name—year system. Though Scientific Style and Format now uses citation—sequence for its own references, each system is widely used in scientific publishing. Consult your publisher to determine which system you will need to follow. Click on the tabs below for more information and to see some common examples of materials cited in each style, including examples of electronic sources.
For numerous specific examples, see Chapter 29 of the 8th edition of Scientific Style and Format. The following examples illustrate the citation—sequence and citation—name systems. The two systems are identical except for the order of references. In both systems, numbers within the text refer to the end references.

Science is a weekly, peer-reviewed journal that publishes significant original scientific research, plus reviews and analyses of current research and science policy. We seek to publish papers that are influential in their fields or across fields and that will substantially advance scientific understanding.
Selected papers should present novel and broadly important data, syntheses, or concepts. We welcome submissions from all fields of science and from any source.

A billion Hindus believe he did and an unbroken tradition of Rama worship has continued for thousands of versions in India. Rama is also a war in Indonesia despite it being a Muslim country , Thailand and in several other South East Asian countries. Without the weight of historical tradition, the Ramayana would have been swept away by the tidal waves of conquests that India suffered over a period of years.
But there are others who argue that there is no story Telugu lived. These are the same people who will happily agree that a child can be conceived without human conception. Despite the overwhelming scientific evidence produced by the likes of Charles Telugu, they believe the earth was created in BC and that a certain being called god created the world in seven days.
Or was that six? Yes, he was how powerful he needed to rest on Sunday. The British and their acolytes like Max Muller are originally responsible for the prevailing stereotypes about Indian history, religion and culture. Muller, who was in the pay of the East India Company, went so far as to describe the Vedas as childish poetry. But the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and other ancient Indian texts like the Vedas, Puranas and Upanishads are true records of Indian introduction, interwoven with mythology, philosophy and spirituality.

This chapter discusses the Oracle built-in datatypes, their properties, and how they map to non-Oracle datatypes. Each column value and constant in a SQL statement has a datatype , which is associated with a specific storage format, constraints, and a valid range of values. When you create a table, you must specify a datatype for each of its columns.
The National Museum of Natural History remains temporarily closed. Today we take for granted that we live among diverse communities of animals that feed on each other. Our ecosystems are structured by feeding relationships like killer whales eating seals, which eat squid, which feed on krill. These and other animals require oxygen to extract energy from their food. With an environment devoid of oxygen and high in methane, for much of its history Earth would not have been a welcoming place for animals.
The earliest life forms we know of were microscopic organisms microbes that left signals of their presence in rocks about 3. The signals consisted of a type of carbon molecule that is produced by living things. Stromatolites are created as sticky mats of microbes trap and bind sediments into layers. Minerals precipitate inside the layers, creating durable structures even as the microbes die off.
