The Oyster card is a payment method for public transport in London and certain areas around it in the United Kingdom. A standard Oyster card is a blue credit-card-sized stored-value contact-less smart-card. Since its introduction in June , more than 86 million cards have been used. Oyster cards can hold period tickets; travel permits and; most commonly, credit for travel “Pay as you go” , which must be added to the card before travel. Passengers touch it on an electronic reader when entering and leaving the transport system in order to validate it or deduct funds from the stored credit. Cards may be “topped-up” by recurring payment authority , by online purchase , at credit card terminals or by cash , the last two methods at stations or ticket offices. The card is designed to reduce the number of transactions at ticket offices and the number of paper tickets. Usage is encouraged by offering substantially cheaper fares than with cash  though the acceptance of cash is being phased out. On London buses, cash is no longer accepted. The card was first issued to the public on 30 June ,  with a limited range of features and there continues to be a phased introduction of further functions.

The Freedom Pass is a travelcard for qualifying Londoners that offers free access to public transport across the Transport for London network. If you were aged 60 or over on the 6th of April then you automatically qualify for a Freedom Pass. How to use your Oyster card on Gatwick Express trains in London. You can use Oyster on all of our trains for journeys that start and finish in the London Travelcard area. However, as this is a first-generation Oyster card, it won’t work with the app. To use the app, you’ll need to replace this first-generation Oyster card. The easiest thing to do is to transfer any remaining pay as you go credit to another Oyster card; this can be one you already have, or you can get a new Oyster card and add it to your online account.
Alternatively you can get a refund. But despite having antique Oysters, and with no interest in using the Oyster app, my cards have worked fine when used for PAYG or with seven day Travelcards loaded. My ‘first generation’s oysters work fine, I saw the message as well, think it’s only if you want to use the app they have developed. I was able to still view the journeys on line, I have a freedom pass now so just use the oysters if I need to train by train in the peak period or let friends use them on PAYG.
I receive the same ‘first generation oystercard’ alert when I login to my account, I decided the same as Travellerplus, unless and until I’m forced to change over i will keep my vintage card.
